Travelogue: Blood moon at the Trona Pinnacles

A storm cloud kicking up the dust of the High Sierra desert in Trona, CA
The wind blowing the desert sand outside of Ridgecrest, CA

There is a space between waking up and being awake where dreaming and consciousness intertwine. The intersection of a mind that is both unwinding and winding up where bizarre and vivid stories unfold for a brief moment.

Some of you will remember having clock radios. Did you ever have whatever was on the radio make it into your dream? Remember how eerie that was? Perfectly positioned to begin your day in Imaginationland. And when Imaginationland is particularly vivid, you replay it all day. I wrote the chorus to the song Halflight in Imaginationland. I had been singing those words to that melody for a few minutes before I realized it wasn't a song someone else wrote. It was a song I had just written.

A bird flies over a rocky desert hill.
I didn’t know the bird was in the shot when I pressed the shutter.

One November morning, early in the writing process for my new album, in Imaginationland, I was with my band The Coyotes in the desert singing a song I had just written called Blood Moon underneath the literal Blood Moon. I couldn’t shake the image. In many ways it has defined how we’ve pursued making this album. That was November 2023.

The full moon through the Trona Pinnacles on March 13th, 2025 just hours before the total ecclipse.
The full moon before it became a Blood Moon.

Last Thursday night (March 13th) I sang Blood Moon in the desert underneath the literal Blood Moon. Though the Coyotes weren't with me, it was still a pretty magical experience. And I guess dreams do come true.

Oh, and there might be a video...
